Though currently most known for his work as a filmmaker (ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE UNDEAD (2010) ALTER EGOS (2012) AVA’S POSSESSIONS (2016) Galland acquired a modicum of notoriety fronting late ‘90’s band Dopo Yume. Though his film work eats up his daylight hours, and often nighttime hours too, Galland has found time to make music continually for the bulk of his life.
As a musician, Galland formed Dopo Yume during his senior year of high school. After graduation they toured the U.S. opening for Sean Lennon and Rufus Wainwright. When his rhythm section went off to college, Galland enlisted a continuously-rotating cast of band members (sometimes playing solo acoustic, telling the crowd “Dopo Yume is in between relationships.”) Galland released eight records with Dopo Yume (3 cassette-only albums, 3 EPs, 2 Full Lengths) between 1998 and 2005, and has collaborated on various projects with Mark Ronson, Daniel Merriweather, Cibo Matto and Sean Lennon.
After Dopo Yume, Galland and friend Domino Kirke formed the band Domino. They signed to Mark Ronson’s ALLIDO RECORDS, and released the Ronson-produced LP Adults Only in 2008. They split up following the release, and Galland went on to release two full length solo records and two EPs. Manhattan is his fifth solo release.
Galland was born and raised in Manhattan, but ironically, he wrote Manhattan the month he moved to Brooklyn. Recording at producer Charlie Klarsfeld’s (The Americans) studio in Bushwick, the record finds Galland and Klarsfeld handling the bulk of the instruments with Matt Romano (Albert Hammond Jr.) on drums.
Concurrent to all of this, Galland’s creative bent wandered naturally into the world of film. He directed Dopo Yume’s videos, and contributed music to films and TV shows such as Lena Dunham’s TINY FURNITURE and The Neistat Brothers’ HBO Original Series, a wrote an original score for the award-winning “Supporting Characters” (2012). Finding profound satisfaction as a director, AVA’S POSSESSIONS (2016) was Galland’s third feature film as a writer/director. His first feature, ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE UNDEAD, premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2009 and was released theatrically by Indican Pictures. His second film, ALTER EGOS, premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival in 2012 and was released by Kevin Smith’s Smodcast label through Phase 4 Films. The original scores for all three films were composed by Sean Lennon, with songs written by Galland as well. He has also directed commercials and music videos.
