Disney Developing Live-Action MULAN

Disney is on a roll lately adapting their animated properties into live-action films. Cinderella has been performing fairly solidly at the box office, and was met with mostly positive reviews. Then there’s Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation, which has been receiving good buzz because of some smart casting. Then there was the rather unfortunate news that Tim Burton would direct a live-action Dumbo (why?).

Now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Mulan will be the next Disney project to get the live-action treatment. Released in 1998, the original Disney Mulan may not have been as popular as The Lion King or Aladdin, but it was an enjoyable film with catchy songs, and sometimes that’s all you need. Telling the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to join the army in her elderly father’s place, the story is based on an old Chinese legend, and as such has been turned into a live-action film before in 2009, with the film Mulan: Rise of a Warrior. That adaptation was a more serious take on the material, with none of the Disney elements like people bursting into song or Eddie Murphy as a wisecracking dragon. Now let’s get down to business to defeat the Huns.
