EXCLUSIVE: The Martian Q & A Panel

Put on your big awkward helmet: Ridley Scott’s The Martian hits theaters everywhere this weekend. To promote the film, a special Q&A panel discussion was recently held in the Fels Planetarium at the Franklin Institute here in our neck of the woods, Philadelphia, and we were there to film it for you. Moderated by Chief Astronomer Derrick Pitts, the panel included Martian cast members Sebastian Stan (aka The Winter Soldier from the Captain America films) and Mackenzie Davis as well as the film’s consultant, Dr. Jim “Mr. Mars” Green – who just this week announced there was water on Mars (!!), and retired NASA astronaut, Nicole Stott. Check out the panel above for all the dirty details on Mars, The Martian and how astronauts go to the bathroom in space. It’ll feel like you’re actually at the Q&A! Just don’t try to ask any questions, because this is a video and these people can’t really hear you.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a bestselling novel, and helmed by director Ridley Scott, The Martian features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
