Trailer: True Detective Season 2

True Detective Season 1 felt like a pretty big deal. It had a unique story, coupled with great actors, great scripts and a great director. Basically it was great! It’s a tough act to follow, and the promotion for the anticipated second season has felt, at times, a bit muted.

An earlier trailer for Season 2 set the mood with an unconnected montage of scenes, void of any dialogue. Some felt it was underwhelming. Now as we near the premiere of the second season in June, there’s a brand new trailer, and this time people get to say things in it!

Impressions: getting a real Michael Mann vibe from this footage, what with scenes of people in blue-tinged light, or gazing off into the distance, or just the general “L.A. at nighttime” feel. Or it could just be that Colin Farrell is sporting the same mustache here he had in Mann’s Miami Vice. Other thoughts on the trailer: it’s looks very dark and moody, which should be expected at this point. Some people may not like that, and feel like it’s “too serious.” Me? Sometimes “too serious” is exactly what I’m looking for. I also love the shot of Rachel McAdams practicing her stabbing skills on a cardboard dummy.

True Detective Season 2 starring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch premieres 6/21 on HBO.
